Privacy policy
The Dial is a weekly coffee newsletter. This page explains what information we collect when you visit our website and subscribe, why we collect it, and what your rights are.
Who we are
The Dial is an independent newsletter. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, you can reach us at hello@thedialnewsletter.co.uk.
What we collect
When you subscribe: the email address you give us, the date you signed up, and the country you signed up from. We work out your country automatically from your internet connection at the moment you subscribe, and we only keep the country, never your IP address or anything more precise. If you subscribed before 3 October 2026, we've recorded your country as the UK, as that's where we promote the newsletter. The subscribe form doesn't ask for your name or anything else.
When you read the newsletter: our email provider records whether each email was delivered, whether you opened it, and which links you clicked. Opens are detected with a small invisible image, and links pass through a tracking link before taking you to the page.
When you visit our website: we use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site, and the Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Reddit pixels to measure how well our adverts work. These tools use cookies and similar technologies, and collect information such as the pages you visit, your browser and device, and whether you signed up after seeing one of our ads.
Why we collect it
We use your email address to send you The Dial. We rely on your consent as the legal basis for this. You give it by submitting the form, and you can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing or asking us to delete your details.
We use opens, clicks and your country to understand what readers enjoy and where they are, so we can make the newsletter better. We also share anonymous, combined figures (for example, "80% of readers are in the UK" or "54% of readers opened the last issue") with brands who sponsor or partner with the newsletter. We never share your email address or anything that identifies you. The legal basis for this is our legitimate interest in understanding and growing our readership.
We use website analytics and advertising pixels to understand how visitors find us and to measure and improve our adverts.
Where it's stored
Subscriber details are stored with Supabase, our database provider, on servers located in the EU. Access is restricted. The database is configured so it only accepts new signups; it cannot be read, browsed or exported through the website itself.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your data or share your email address with anyone for their own marketing. We use these providers to run The Dial, and they process data on our behalf:
- Supabase: our database, where subscriber details are stored.
- Resend: sends the newsletter and records deliveries, opens and clicks.
- Vercel: hosts our website and tells us which country a visitor is in.
- Google (Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager): website analytics.
- Meta and Reddit: advertising pixels that measure our adverts on their platforms.
Some of these providers are based in, or process data in, the United States.
Cookies and your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and use a content blocker to stop analytics and advertising tools from loading. You can also opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on, and manage ad preferences in your Meta and Reddit account settings. Blocking these won't stop the website or the newsletter from working.
How long we keep it
We keep your details for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep a record of your email address marked as unsubscribed, so we never email you again by mistake. If you'd rather we deleted it completely, just ask and we will. Email open and click records are kept by our email provider in line with its own retention periods.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you can ask us to: tell you what data we hold on you, correct it if it's wrong, delete it, or export it. You can also object to us using your data for understanding our readership. To do any of this, email hello@thedialnewsletter.co.uk and we'll sort it promptly. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Changes to this policy
If how we handle your data changes, we'll update this page and change the date at the top.
